Agile and Cognitive Cloud-edge Continuum management

Cloud Edge Computing Continuum (CECC) is a natural evolution of information technology (IT) provisioning of computation and storage, which was traditionally bound to centralized data centres (DC), while keeping the application logic and intelligence at the centralized cloud. The emergence of new services has necessitated moving the processing of data closer to end-users and data producers (sensors, smartphones, etc.). Thereby unleashing the full potential of edge computing. Thus, the need for a scalable and agile IT infrastructure/framework that comprehensively considers these service challenges and optimally addresses them becomes imperative. Furthermore, the application communication model has shifted from the classical client/server model to a new model involving three actors: client or application consumer, application, and data source.

To address these highlighted potential challenges and more, in AC3: Agile and Cognitive Cloud-edge Continuum management a novel CECC management framework is devised. The CECCM will consider three key dimensions to innovate and ensure the necessary agility for application execution and deployment, while optimally managing IT and network resources to ensure resource efficiency and energy consumption optimization. These dimensions correspond to: (i) a sophisticated application Life Cycle Management (LCM), considering not only the application and its components life cycle, but also the data source that it relies on, and the Service Level Agreement (SLA) that is agreed with the application developer; (ii) CECC IT, including far-edge, and networking resource optimization; (iii) A trusted resource federation to handle the lack of resources particularly at the edge, which is necessary to optimally control any data deluge.
